Diet Changes

Dietary interventions may be tried for patients with functional abdominal pain associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  Your doctor will be able to advise you whether these are right for you.  By definition, the functional abdominal pain associated with IBS is not due to food allergies, but some patients may be sensitive to certain foods.

COMMON DIET INTERVENTIONS FOR IBS

  • Limiting greasy/spicy foods
  • Limiting caffeine and juices
  • Limiting intake of artificial sweeteners, high sugar foods or drinks, including high fructose corn syrup
  • Limiting lactose, the sugar in milk products
  • Limiting FODMAPS (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols)
  • High fiber diet, especially for teens who also have constipation

You should speak with your doctor about any diet changes recommended to help manage your Functional Abdominal Pain.
