What About School?
Some teens with functional abdominal pain struggle with missing school. Being in school as much as possible should be a goal. Missing days and getting behind on schoolwork will only increase your stress levels, potentially increasing your pain. It definitely can be hard to concentrate in class when you are in pain, but having strategies figured out ahead of time can make the situation easier. Knowing how to handle painful episodes in a school setting will put you at ease. Talk with your doctor about ways to make sure you are in school and able to manage your pain effectively.
It is good to make sure your school nurse is aware of your situation if you are missing school due to your functional abdominal pain. If school attendance is an issue, your doctor can also communicate with the school. Most teens with functional abdominal pain or Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) do not have school or activity restrictions.
